Australian Permanent Residency is one of the most life-changing milestones a person can achieve โ and one of the most misunderstood. At JRM Migration, we work with clients every day who come to us confused, overwhelmed, and unsure where to even begin.
PR allows you to live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely โ with no visa renewals and no expiry dates. You gain access to Medicare, the right to sponsor eligible family members, and after meeting residency requirements, the pathway to Australian citizenship.
1. Skilled Independent โ Subclass 189
No employer or state sponsor required. A minimum of 65 points is required, though most successful applicants score 80 or above.
2. Skilled Nominated โ Subclass 190
A state or territory nominates you, adding 5 points to your score. Generally more accessible than the 189.
3. Employer Sponsored โ Subclass 482 to 186
Your employer sponsors you on a temporary skilled visa first. After two years, you become eligible to apply for permanent residency.
No two cases are the same. Book a free 30-minute consultation with our team โ so we can assess your individual circumstances and map out the most realistic pathway forward.
Every year, thousands of Indian students arrive in Australia with a dream โ not just to study, but to build a life here. The good news is that the pathway from student visa to permanent residency is real, achievable, and well-travelled.
Everything begins with your student visa. You enrol in a registered course, meet the genuine temporary entrant requirement, and demonstrate sufficient funds.
After graduation, most international students qualify for the Temporary Graduate visa โ giving you 2 to 6 years to live and work in Australia.
Work in your nominated occupation, improve your English score, and accumulate Australian work experience โ all of which add points toward a skilled visa.
With enough points, you submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. When invited, you apply for either the Subclass 189 or 190 โ both lead directly to permanent residency.
Visa refusals are more common than people think โ and most of them are avoidable.
Missing a single document or submitting an outdated version can lead to an immediate refusal.
A difference of one band can mean 10 fewer points โ which could determine whether you receive an invitation at all.
Choosing the wrong ANZSCO occupation code can invalidate your entire application.
Failing to disclose a previous refusal โ even from another country โ can result in a permanent ban.
