Common Questions

Everything you need to know.

Honest answers to the questions we hear most โ€” straight from our agent.

Do I need a migration agent to apply for an Australian visa? +
No โ€” you can apply yourself. But Australian immigration law is complex, and a single error can result in a refusal. A MARA Registered agent like JRM Migration ensures your application is correct, complete, and gives you the strongest possible chance of success.
What does MARA Registered mean and why does it matter? +
MARA stands for the Migration Agents Registration Authority โ€” the Australian government body that regulates migration agents. Only MARA Registered agents are legally allowed to provide migration advice in Australia. When you work with a MARA agent, you are protected by Australian law, a strict Code of Conduct, and a professional complaints process.
How much does it cost to work with JRM Migration? +
Your first consultation is completely free โ€” 30 minutes, no obligation. After that, fees depend on the visa type and complexity of your case. We always provide a clear written quote before any work begins, so there are no surprises. There are also separate government charges (visa application fees) that are paid directly to the Department of Home Affairs โ€” we will explain all of these upfront.
How long does an Australian visa take to process? +
Processing times vary significantly depending on the visa type. Student visas can be decided in a few weeks. Partner visas can take 12 to 30 months. Skilled visas depend on when you receive an invitation through SkillSelect. We give you realistic timeframes based on the current processing environment โ€” not optimistic guesses.
Can I apply for Australian PR from India? +
Yes โ€” several pathways allow you to apply for Australian permanent residency from outside Australia. The Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190) can both be applied for offshore. We also have an office in India and regularly help clients at every stage of the process โ€” from skills assessment through to visa grant.
Can JRM Migration help if my visa was previously refused? +
Yes. A previous refusal does not automatically prevent you from applying again โ€” but it must be disclosed on any future application. We will review what happened, identify what can be strengthened, and advise honestly on whether a fresh application is viable and what it will take to succeed.
Do you offer consultations in Punjabi or Hindi? +
Yes โ€” we consult in English, Punjabi, and Hindi. We believe migration is complex enough without a language barrier. Our goal is for every client to fully understand their situation, their options, and every step of the process.

PR Pathways
The Complete Guide to Australian Permanent Residency in 2026

Australian Permanent Residency is one of the most life-changing milestones a person can achieve โ€” and one of the most misunderstood. At JRM Migration, we work with clients every day who come to us confused, overwhelmed, and unsure where to even begin.

What is Permanent Residency?

PR allows you to live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely โ€” with no visa renewals and no expiry dates. You gain access to Medicare, the right to sponsor eligible family members, and after meeting residency requirements, the pathway to Australian citizenship.

The Main PR Pathways in 2026

1. Skilled Independent โ€” Subclass 189
No employer or state sponsor required. A minimum of 65 points is required, though most successful applicants score 80 or above.

2. Skilled Nominated โ€” Subclass 190
A state or territory nominates you, adding 5 points to your score. Generally more accessible than the 189.

3. Employer Sponsored โ€” Subclass 482 to 186
Your employer sponsors you on a temporary skilled visa first. After two years, you become eligible to apply for permanent residency.

Our Advice

No two cases are the same. Book a free 30-minute consultation with our team โ€” so we can assess your individual circumstances and map out the most realistic pathway forward.

Student Visas
Student Visa to PR โ€” Is It Possible?

Every year, thousands of Indian students arrive in Australia with a dream โ€” not just to study, but to build a life here. The good news is that the pathway from student visa to permanent residency is real, achievable, and well-travelled.

Step 1 โ€” Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Everything begins with your student visa. You enrol in a registered course, meet the genuine temporary entrant requirement, and demonstrate sufficient funds.

Step 2 โ€” Graduate Temporary Visa (Subclass 485)

After graduation, most international students qualify for the Temporary Graduate visa โ€” giving you 2 to 6 years to live and work in Australia.

Step 3 โ€” Build Your Points and Skills

Work in your nominated occupation, improve your English score, and accumulate Australian work experience โ€” all of which add points toward a skilled visa.

Step 4 โ€” Apply for a Skilled Visa

With enough points, you submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. When invited, you apply for either the Subclass 189 or 190 โ€” both lead directly to permanent residency.

Visa Tips
5 Mistakes That Get Visa Applications Refused

Visa refusals are more common than people think โ€” and most of them are avoidable.

Mistake 1 โ€” Incomplete or Incorrect Documents

Missing a single document or submitting an outdated version can lead to an immediate refusal.

Mistake 2 โ€” Poor English Test Scores

A difference of one band can mean 10 fewer points โ€” which could determine whether you receive an invitation at all.

Mistake 3 โ€” Incorrect Occupation or Skills Assessment

Choosing the wrong ANZSCO occupation code can invalidate your entire application.

Mistake 4 โ€” Not Disclosing Previous Visa Refusals

Failing to disclose a previous refusal โ€” even from another country โ€” can result in a permanent ban.

Mistake 5 โ€” Using an Unregistered Migration Agent

In Australia, only MARA registered agents are legally allowed to provide migration advice. Always check the MARA register before engaging anyone.
